Ben Lahring’s formative years were spent in tropical Darwin, Australia, where he began his classical guitar training with Stephan Bulmer at Charles Darwin University.

 

Considering a career in church music, Ben earned his Bachelor of Music from Wesley Institute in Sydney, Australia, studying guitar with Philip Moran. During this time, Ben maintained a weekly performance residency at the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel. His undergraduate studies also encompassed singing, choral conducting, and composition. He has been a Writer Member of the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) since 2005.

 

In 2008, Ben moved to New York City, where he took lessons with Ben Verdery and was an active member of the New York City Classical Guitar Society. In 2012, he worked with Dave Hedin of Metrolight Music to record an album of solo guitar works.

At the end of 2012, Ben moved to Alberta, Canada and spent the next eight years working in church music. As music director and worship pastor, he regularly led worship services and choir rehearsals. During this period, he studied singing with John Tessier (University of Alberta), and choral conducting with Humberto Vargas.

 

Ben is currently completing his Master of Music (Guitar Performance) at the University of Calgary, where he studies guitar with Ralph Maier and has been working as a teaching assistant for the University Chorus and undergraduate musicianship classes. Masterclasses with Jason Vieaux, Johan Smith, Rene Izquierdo, and Judicael Perroy, amongst others, have also been influential in the development of his playing.
